The Kansas City Chiefs are still making moves to improve their team before the start of the 2021 NFL season. This time, they went after a piece that could help their defense improve. Former Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes could do just that.

Some of you may be thinking that this trade really does mean anything. It is fair to think that when the Chiefs secondary was the best part of their defense through the entire season. However, they did have a big issue with injuries last season overall, and the following season could be that way as well.

With the Chiefs now playing an extra game in 2021, there is a more significant risk of injuries in the regular season. While Mike Hughes may not be a household name, he can bring tremendous depth to the secondary. Hughes may even start a game or two if we are lucky.

Chiefs Add Depth with Mike Hughes

The Kansas City Chiefs made this move specifically to add depth in their secondary. With L’Jarius Sneed emerging as a potential star cornerback, Kansas City will be loaded in the defensive backfield.

Let’s not forget the outstanding season that Bashaud Breeland had as well. He was tasked every week with guarding the opposing team’s best receiver and did just that. Charvarius Ward was another player who had a great season, despite having a cast on his hand for the majority of the year.

This secondary is already loaded with talent, and Mike Hughes will add even more to that as well. Yes, Hughes has only played 24 games in his three-year career, but that was due to injuries. There is a reason the 5’10” cornerback out of North Carolina was a first-round pick.

In the short sample size we have had from Mike Hughes, he has put up some impressive numbers. In those 24 games, Hughes tallied two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 13 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and 80 combined tackles. Those numbers are not too bad if you ask me.

The 24-year-old cornerback will add value to this Chiefs team, more than we may expect. He can step in when someone is hurt and has the talent to make up for it. It will be interesting to see how the Chiefs use him and how his season goes.
